US firm Gibson Dunn & Crutcher has promoted 37 lawyers to its partnership, 10 more than last year’s promotion round.
Women accounted for 16 of this year’s cohort, or 43%. Last year 12 made the cut, or 44% of the overall round. US promotions dominated, with just five outside North America, including Hanna Chalhoub and Nooree Moola in Dubai, Piers Plumptre in London, Katharina Humphrey in Munich and Jan Schubert in Frankfurt. New York saw the most promotions with eight, followed by seven in Washington DC, six in its Los Angeles headquarters and five in Dallas. The firm’s West Coast offices including LA, San Francisco and Palo Alto accounted for more than a third of promotions in total.
The litigation department saw the biggest uplift with 12 newly minted partners, including Martie Kutscher Clark in Palo Alto, Christine Demana in Dallas and Naima Farrell in Washington DC. M&A saw the second highest with six, including Daniel Alterbaum in New York, Joe Orien in Dallas and Sarah Graham in LA. International arbitration and private equity followed with three each. In total there were promotions across 16 different practice areas. The international promotions were spread across private equity, white collar defence, international arbitration and litigation.

In addition to the five international promotions, Gibson Dunn has been busy in the lateral hiring market in recent weeks. At the end of October the firm hired disputes partner Paul Tan from Clifford Chance’s Singapore alliance Cavenagh Law. Tan will head up the firm’s international arbitration practice in Asia.
Also joining will be former European Court of Human Rights president Judge Robert Spano, whose term at the court ended last month. He will be based in the firm’s London office from the start of next year and will serve as counsel.
That followed the hiring of senior corporate partner Marwan Elaraby in Dubai from Shearman & Sterling, also in October.
