Barclays has partnered with UK law firms TLT and Simmons & Simmons to launch a joint training contract that will see trainees split their time evenly between in-house and private practice. 

The scheme is intended to widen access to the legal sector and will offer trainees the chance to spend half of their training contract with TLT or Simmons and the other with Barclays. 

The initial intake for the programme will be two London-based trainees – one at TLT and one at Simmons & Simmons in September 2023. Two more trainees will take part in March 2024, with the law firms acting as employers for the duration of the contract. 

The scheme is intended to enhance the trainees’ legal knowledge and help them to stand out in a competitive legal market by giving them exposure to top 50 UK law firms and one of the most recognised financial institutions in the UK.

This scheme will offer trainees the opportunity to experience working in a law firm and as part of a great in-house team, and we look forward to working with the successful candidates joining this pioneering programme”.  

TLT said it was likely the trainees would spend the first six months in private practice and the second seat at Barclays, with the same arrangement for the second year.

The structure will allow trainees to work in two different practice areas at the law firm while at Barclays they will experience a range of work which goes beyond a six-month secondment, with a joined-up approach intended to offer insight into both types of roles. 

At the end of the programme, trainees will be able to apply for any open, newly qualified positions that may be available at either Barclays or their chosen law firm.
